Oktoberfest
Shortly after Msgr. John became pastor of Holy Family, a group of parishioners were talking with him about parish activities and the St. Patrick’s Day Party in particular. One parishioner asked him if he was Irish and Father John replied “not Irish, but German.” German - Oktoberfest! The idea was born and the next October, under the auspices of the Hospitality Commission, the first Holy Family Oktoberfest was held.
It was always intended to be a family affair, held on a Sunday afternoon complete with German beer, food and music. The menu, originally prepared and served totally be dedicated volunteers and members of the Hospitality Commission had been enhanced by the culinary skills of Tom Herc and the kitchen crew enlarged with the addition of some K or C members. The mainstay of the menu included roast pork, potatoes, bratwurst, sauerkraut, salad and strudel along with special Oktoberfest beer, wine and soft drinks.
After dinner the merriment continues with special activities planned for the children. Through the years the entertainment has included a puppeteer, special craft activities and games, face painting, movies and more. These generally take place in the Father O’Brien Family Center and during the time the children are being entertained, the adults have the opportunity to enjoy dancing to the authentic German band. When the children return, German songs and dances are available for adults and children alike.
